JETRO Internship Program
This internship program aims to
send undergraduate school and graduate school students of Waseda University to the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in line with academic
exchange programs between Waseda and JETRO. Applications for this program are
accepted from October to November of every year. Internships will begin the
following year.
For further information on applying for the 2007 academic year,
please visit the relevant department office or refer to the web site of the Career Center in or after October. An outline of the 2006 application is given below as an
example. (Please note that applications for that year are no longer being
accepted.)
Eligibility for application
Applicants must be full-time graduate school students or full-time
undergraduate school students (junior or higher) as of April 1 of the
application year.
For applicants who wish to be sent to one of JETROfs overseas
offices, a certain level of proficiency in foreign languages is required. If
foreign students studying at Waseda wish to become an intern at one of JETROfs
offices in Japan, they will need to be able to speak Japanese at the daily
conversation level. Regardless of the applicantfs request or desire, the
destination he/she is to be dispatched—whether to domestic or overseas
offices—may be affected by his/her foreign-language ability.
Number of interns being sent and duration of
internship
Only a few people are accepted as interns under this internship program. The
duration of their internship can be up to one year, although more than three
months is preferable. Interns are to be dispatched to domestic and overseas
offices of JETRO. (JETRO has 36 domestic representative offices and 74 overseas
representative offices in 56 countries.) In principle, each intern is accepted
at one office for the duration of his/her internship period. If more than one
person applies for the same office, coordination will become necessary. The
duration of the internship and the office an intern is sent are subject to
change according to the situation of the office that accepts the intern. If
such changes become necessary, the applicant is to consult with the relevant
parties about making adjustments. Once an applicant submits a request for the
duration of the internship and location of the office where he/she wishes to be
dispatched, he/she cannot alter that request unless there are inevitable
reasons or circumstances for doing so. Therefore, applicants are asked to
confirm that their internship at JETRO will not interfere with their research
work or class activities before submitting an application. Relevant department/
school makes a descision if an applicant is accepted to take a year's leave of
absence for participating in JETRO internship program.
How to apply
Documents to be submitted: Application form (The form is
available at relevant graduate school
faculty offices and undergraduate school offices.)
Where to submit documents: The office of graduate school
faculty to which the applicant belongs or the office of the undergraduate
school to which the applicant belongs
Deadline of submission: Friday, December 2, 2005
Selection
Wasedafs Career Center will adjust the number of applicants and the JETRO
offices they wish to be sent to after receiving recommendations of applicants
from graduate school and undergraduate schools. The Career Center will then make a formal recommendation to JETRO. JETRO, for its part, will interview
each student recommended by Waseda and finalize who are to be sent as interns
(mid-January to late January of 2005).
Expenses
Students who are chosen as interns under the JETRO internship program
are required to pay tuition to Waseda University. Interns are not paid for
their internship, and their transportation cost during their internships will
not be provided by either JETRO or Waseda. In addition, interns are required to
pay for their own accommodations and travel expenses to the JETRO office where
they are to start their internship.
Content of internship
Interns basically work as trainees at JETRO offices. Their main job is
clerical-related support work. Specifically, they will undertake simple
research work, pigeonhole data, prepare reports and documents, play an
auxiliary role in JETRO events, and engage in other clerical work. Interns work
during office hours, usually from 9:00 to 17:00 in the case of domestic
offices.
Interns can ask JETRO officials for advice regarding the research
themes they are pursuing at Waseda. However, they are basically expected to
engage in personal research activities after their host office closes.
Rules for interns
Interns must follow the instructions and orders given by the JETRO staff
of their host office. They must also abide by the following rules.
- Interns must not endanger the reputation of JETRO or undermine its interest.
- Interns must not leak confidential information about JETRO or JETROfs
partners that they obtained through their internship.
Compensation for disaster-related damage
Interns who are to work at domestic offices are required to subscribe to
insurance policies to cover damages liability arising from internship, nursing
care activities, and educational training. (The financial cost to interns is
JPY 400.) Interns who are to work at overseas offices are required to purchase
policies to insure against overseas travel accidents, which should include
coverage for damages against persons.
Interns who are injured during their internship due to a disaster
are eligible to receive compensation under casualty insurance, which is
designed to cover a studentfs injuries from a disaster while he/she is
receiving an education and engaged in research activities.
If members of JETROfs staff or a third party are injured due to
the deliberate act or negligence of an intern during his/her internship, the
intern has to compensate for damages relating to the injuries.
Others
- If interns are to be dispatched to overseas JETRO offices, they are
required to do their own travel preparations, such as obtaining a visa.
However, interns can ask JETRO for information about living in the host country
and documents needed to obtain a visa.
- Interns must participate in internship orientations sponsored by the Career Center and JETRO.
- If applicants for internships find it necessary to revise their internship
plans after Waseda has decided to recommend them to JETRO, they have to consult
The Career Center beforehand.
- Interns are not given any privileged treatment in recruitment activities in
JETRO Japan or overseas offices. Please note that internship has no relation to
job-hunting.
Note: Because the content of the
internship application is subject to change, those who wish to apply for the
program are asked to refer to the programfs brochure and other documents.
