1. Outline

Waseda University Grant for Special Research Projects provides grants to Waseda University full-time faculty (professor, associate professor, assistant professor, teacher, non-tenured professor, non-tenured assistant professor, research associate) who is conducting individual or group research. Applications were accepted as follows for Waseda University Grant for Special Research Projects (hereinafter “Special Projects”) A, B in fiscal 2012.

2. Application method

Please follow “Application Requirements of Waseda University Grant for Special Research Projects” available from Waseda-net Portal or the Research Promotion Division website in early October, to compile and submit documents such as “Research Plan” to the Research Support Section of the Research Promotion Division through your department office (formats of Research Plan are available for download from the Application Procedure website).

3. Allocation screening

Allocation screening will be conducted by the Screening Committee of Waseda University Grant for Special Research Projects in the form of document screening and consultation among screening committee members, and will be based upon submitted documents such as Research Plans. The screening will also refer to the screening results of Grants-in-Aid for the MEXT Subsidiary Scientific Research and the status of research outcome disclosure obligations.

4. Grant distribution

Selection of research plan and grant amount will be decided in late March for Waseda University Special Research Projects A and in late June for Special Research Projects B, Upon completion of screening by the Screening Committee of Waseda University Grant for Special Research Projects and upon approval by the intramural Executive Board. Applicants selected for grants will be informed through their department offices.

5. Plan for use of grant

Applicants selected for grants must submit “Plan for Use of Grant (Shiyo keikaku sho)”(sent at the same time as the notice of grant selection) to the Research Support Section of Research Promotion Division through the applicant’s department office. Research grants cannot be allotted if “Plan for Use of Grant” is not submitted.

7. Procedures after completion of research

Upon completion of the research, “Financial Report (Kessan hokoku sho)” and “Outline of Research Outcome (Kenkyu seika gaiyo)” must be submitted to Research Support Section of Research Promotion Division. Please confirm the disbursed amounts for pursuit of research in “Financial Report”, to be prepared by the relevant department office. Please fill out “Outline of Research Outcome” individually through the Waseda-net Portal system. Operating instructions for use of the portal will be made available at end of academic year. The “Outline of Research Outcome” will be made available on the Internet.

  • *Applications will not be accepted in the following fiscal year if “Outline of Research Outcome” is not submitted.
    Those who have received focused grants must present their research outcome at an international academic society meeting within one year of the completion of the research period, or their publish research outcome in a book or academic journal within two years of the end of the research period, and must submit one copy of the published outcome. In the case of presenting at academic meeting, a copy of the program and a summary are required to be submitted.
  • * In the case of publishing in a book or journal, please be sure to state clearly that the research has received Waseda University Grant for Special Research Projects and state its subject number.

Machinery and Equipment Individual items or units costing 300,000 yen or over, which will last or be in use for one year or longer.
  • 1. Purchase of necessary machinery and equipment required for and related directly to the research specified in the grant.
  • 2. Purchased items cannot be installed off campus.
  • 3. Articles may not be purchased if they will require maintenance beyond the period of the Grant for Special Research Projects.
  • 4. The name, quantity and specifications of each purchased article must be provided for registration under “Rules for Procurement”.
  • 5. The funds from this grant may not be combined with those from other research grants.
Supplies Expenses Individual items or units costing 100,00 yen or more and less than 300,000 yen, which will last or be in use for one year or longer. Same as machinery and equipment (above).
Consumables Articles with purchase price of less than 100,000 yen and/or lasting or in use for less than one year.
  • (*Note: this includes articles regarded as lasting or in use of more than 1 year, even if the cost is more than 100,000 yen.)

  • 3. All articles with some form of information content, including videotapes, CD-ROMs, databases, microfilm material, are categorized as books and materials.

Research Support Staff (RS)

Wages (Personnel Expenses)

Able to staff RS to support research activities.

Research Assistants (RA) Allowance (Personnel Expenses) Employment of (RA) as a cooperant for the conduct of the research.
Eligibility: Doctorate students of Waseda University graduation school
Sundry Expenses for Meetings Meetings necessary for research. Maximum 2,000 yen per person per meeting (Cannot involve expenses for alcohol).
Inncidentals Computer usage fees, remittance fees, registration fees for academic conferences, etc. Specify details of use.
Example of Items Not Covered in Principle Electric appliances such as air conditioners, electric fans, heaters, fridges, satellite broadcasting antennas, video decks, TV sets, projectors, reading lamps, furniture such as bookshelves and chairs, fountain pens, business cards, personal seals, personalized stationery, music software such as records and CDs, water boilers, fax machines, telephones, taxi fare, car rental fees, school fees, annual membership fees for academic societies, Project Research Institute participation fees.
