Kassel-Waseda RIEEM Workshop

May 10, 2018 at Waseda Neo, COREDO Nihonbashi

On 10th May, 2018, Research Institute for Environmental Economics and Management (RIEEM) hosted a workshop entitled Kassel-Waseda RIEEM Workshop at Waseda Neo, COREDO Nihonbashi. The purpose of this workshop is to get to know research interests each other and find collaboration topics for our joint research. We welcomed 6 researchers including Ph.D. students from Kassel University and 15 researchers in total had fruitful discussions towards our joint research project.

The workshop started with opening remark and introduction of RIEEM by the director of RIEEM, Professor Toshi H. Arimura.

Afterwards, Professor Arimura introduced Waseda University, especially focusing on its faculties and research institutes, history and global network,

Following the introduction of Waseda University, Professor Andreas Ziegler from University of Kassel introduced the city of Kassel, their University, and research projects that Prof. Ziegler and Prof. Wetzel direct.

Then, Professor Arimura had an introduction of RIEEM, and he presented summaries of three research projects.

After lunch break, Daniel Engler (Ph.D. student at University of Kassel) introduced research projects that he has been working for and talked about his work entitled “Econometric analysis of environmental stated choice data.” He presented the empirical results of large survey regarding household preferences to electricity plans as well as his future task.

Dr. Gunnar Gutsche (University of Kassel) presented his research entitled “Sustainable finance: Individual investment behavior and stock market reactions.” He examined what are investment decision factors especially for sustainable investment, using choice experiment questions with more than 1,000 respondents in the internet survey.

Dr. Miwa Nakai (Waseda University) gave a talk entitled “Consumers’ energy choices and their relationship with energy literacy” which examines how consumer preferences towards electricity such as energy mix and CO2 emissions due to electricity generation are related to the level of energy knowledge.

Dr. Mari Sakudo (Development Bank of Japan, Waseda University, Japan Research Institute) spoke her joint research with Professor Arimura and Professor Hajime Katayama (Waseda University) entitled “Do social norms matter to energy saving behavior?”. Their research examines whether social norms plays a role in shaping individual energy saving behaviour considering endogeneity by structural estimation apparoch.

After coffee break, Ms Amantia Simixhiu (Ph.D. student at University of Kassel) talked her research entitled “On the relevance of income and behavioral factors for absolute and relative donations: a framed field experiment.” She conducted a web survey with incentivized experiment to examine the relationship between the amount of donations, and individual income levels and behavioural factors such as social preferences and risk preference.

Tatsuya Abe (Ph.D student at Waseda University) spoke the joint research with Professor Arimura entitled “An Empirical Study of Tokyo Emission Trading Scheme: An Ex-post Analysis of Emissions from Commercial Buildings”. Their study empirically examined the effect of Tokyo Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) on CO2 emission, electricity consumption and energy consumption of commercial buildings in Tokyo.

Professor Heike Wetzel (University of Kassel) talked about her research entitled “Environmental efficiency and regulation in the electricity generation and distribution sector” which includes presentations of two research paper. The first paper examines how competition and regulation affected reductions in CO2 emissions with US state level data. The second paper investigated the impact of decoupling on the electricity demand and electricity efficiency of electricity utilities’ customers in the US.

Finally, the workshop concluded with closing remarks by Professor Ziegler.

This workshop is supported by the Organization for University Research Initiatives, Waseda University, Research Institute for Environmental Economics and Management (RIEEM), and Next-generation Key Researcher Training Program. This event is also supported by JSPS and DAAD under the Japan-Germany Research Cooperative Program.
