Discussion

Prof. Dr. Katinis focused on the role of the Platonism in the political philosophy of the Italian Renaissance, especially, the political Platonism of Marsilio Ficino(1433-99) and his works on Plato’s dialogues, where the rebirth of ancient sophists was found. The sophists were the enemies of Platonism, yet their study has been overlooked. Ficino’s works were to be examined with particular attention to the political aspects. Moreover, the three works of Sperone Speroni(1500-88) were analyzed as a reevaluation of sophistic rhetorics, in which he claimed that sophists served the city’s interests as good rhetoricians in civil and political life. Prof. Dr. Katinis threw the new light on the consistent conflict, therefore inseparably connected relationship, between the Platonism and sophistry in the history of political philosophy.

Prof. Ishiguro compared Botero’s view of “Ragion di Stato” with Machiavelli’s. Machiavelli paid attention to the prince’s “virtu (virtue)” to establish the order from the disorder. He considered such disorder as the normal condition and emphasized the necessity for being more impetuoso (impetuous) than rispettivo (respective or careful). On the other hand, Botero paid attention to the way in which the hereditary monarch could fight against the disorder. He accused Machiavelli’s idea of astuto (cunning). In contrary, he considered prudenza (prudence) and onesto as the legal-ethical limit in case of seeking interests. By the presenter’s conclusion, Botero’s “Ragion di Stato” was accepted in the Italian middle states, rather than in the states outside the Hapsburg hegemony which concentrated on the establishment of the sovereign state.

Before the discussion, we received two valuable comments from Prof.Keninchi Nejime and Prof.Taku Minagawa.

We are grateful that we were able to exchange very productive discussions. We would like to sincerely thank all of you.
