Course Overview
This course aims to provide basic methods for the collection, classification, and database creation of various source materials related to the whole COE programme in order to create a sufficient basis on which to build future research. Practically, Activités concernant les recherches can be divided into three categories, as follows.

Studies in Collection, Classification, and Arrangement of Source Materials
This area of activities comprises the foundation of all research and it aims to seek out diverse quality source material and to classify it academically. It also includes studies on reproducing and restoring source materials.

Studies in Database Creation
This study area is related to such activities as standard format development, establishment of comprehensive database by Relation, administration of a large scale database and database management on websites.

Studies in Digitalising Archive Materials
The aim of this forefront archive research is to explore the possible technical solutions for digitalising archive materials according to their present condition (e.g. sound, still picture, or moving picture), creating databases for archive materials which have previously been digitalised and making them available on web sites. In the process of finding solutions, we will examine problems not only from a bibliographical point of view but also from a technical one (e.g. problems with hardware or software).

(1) Research Group for Pictures of Actors (Coordinator: Osamu WADA)
This project aims to examine and create a database of pictures of actors (Yakusha-e), which are in the collection of the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum. In the light of knowledge of the history of both drama and art, each picture is to be analysed for its period of composition, then considered in terms of its importance as research material for theatre study.

(2) Database Establishment for Rarely Performed Old Jyoruri Music (Coordinator:Osamu WADA)
In this project, we will initially work on establishing a database for Gidayu-bushi and rarely performed old Jyoruri music that still survives to present day, so that further research utilising such information can be conducted.

(3) Film Archives (Coordinator: Hiroshi KOMATSU)
This project comprises research on "Moko Odan" by Masuzo Usuki, research on the films in the collection of the former Manchuria Railway Co., Economic Research Association (now those films are in the Dalian Library collection), database creation for "Nihon Eiga-shi Soko", research on Japanese silent films, studies in the Toba collection, and research on the films of Griffith.

(4)Digital Archive (not open for student application)
This project deals with digitalising various materials in the collection of the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum so that they are made available on websites, serving to fulfil research demands. Through actual data processing, particular attention will be paid to identifying and finding solutions for problems and difficulties.
