Waseda University is the only university in the Orient complete with a comprehensive theatre museum, called The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum that specializes in theatre. It also offer a major in Arts (Theatre and Film) at the Graduate School of Letter, Arts and Sciences that is the countries sole education and research organization offering a doctorate degree in all fields of theatre and movie studies. These two organizations use the archives of The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum to study theatre and movie upon promoting studies and adding to the archives as a result of the studies.
For this reason, Waseda University has become known as the mecca of theatrical studies on an international level in terms of their abundance in human resources and archives. Conventionally, theatrical studies was not accepted as an academic discipline in Japan. This was also the trend around the world, as was thought to be a result that many thought that studies in logic and practicum could not be satisfied at the same time. The actual performances of theatre cannot be saved. However, by using the archives of The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum those houses and stores diverse forms of archives and promoting logical studies, it was possible to create the foundation to major in theatre and movie. By integrating logical studies in theatre with studies on actual performances the school started a new concept that focused on theatrical studies that came to be a new field of study. The other purpose is also to pursue the ideals of new research along with studies in letters and arts, as well.
The ultimate goal of the new field seeks to"Establish Comprehensive Studies in Theatre and Theatrical Science"The Theatre Research Center opened its doors as a program in education and research that specifically defined future plans. New areas of study were incorporated in traditional studies of theatre. Areas covered foreign, especially Western theatrical logic, to transmit and suggest new theatrical methods and logic from Asia to the world. Classic performances have been handed down for several centuries in Japan. When considering the state of Japanfs original theatrical arts, it becomes important and meaningful to the world to study how to restore the original form and to learn about the classic forms of theatre in Japan. The Theatre Research Center, through these studies, intends to ignite innovative research methodologies and academic evaluation standards that become global standards in the field of letters and art studies that tended to be difficult to evaluate on a world level due to the uniqueness of local cultures.
