Purpose and short history of our internet
course:
This course is an epoch-making
internet program comprising series of omnibus lectures made
by five professors of Korea University, Fudan University,
Thammasat University, National University of Singapore (NUS)
and Waseda University as listed later. Back in 2002, Waseda
University called for establishing a joint internet
educational program in use of English to some East Asian
universities to enhance mutual understanding. Professors of
Korea University, Thammasat University and NUS positively
responded to this proposal and decided to hold a cyber
educational program entitled “Co-existence in Asia” in the
following year. In the spring 2004, the four universities
embarked on an experimental course. Totaling 80 students
took part in. Another trial was made in the autumn 2004. The
two experimental courses were considered very successful,
because the participating students told in live lectures
that they had really enjoyed this program. Some expressed
their wishes to provide students with credits as an
incentive.
Since 2004, Fudan University, China, joined this program. Hence, the
contents of this course have expanded. In the same year,
Korea University and Waseda University decided to make this
course as a normal lecture course where students could get
credits. Other universities have expressed their wishes to
follow as soon as possible.
Contents of this lecture series:
- This cyber program consists of ten on-demand
lectures in all. Each professor makes two 90-minute
lectures, using power points plus video-tapes.
- Besides, participating students are required to join
two live lectures on internet, linking five universities
simultaneously. The first one, which will be held in
September, is mainly used to introduce lecturers
(professors) and students. The second one will be made
for meaningful discussions*. Students of Waseda
University and Korea University are required to take
some additional in-house lectures so as to meet the
requirements of each university to provide credits.
- Students who have been accepted to take part in this
course can see cyber course on internet upon their
demand (or whenever they like).
- Professors provide key words or references before
cyber lectures so that students can understand contents
better.
- Professors also prepare short tests during cyber
courses so as to check whether students could understand
the contents.
- Students are requested to submit papers to the
professor of their own university after they studied all
cyber courses in such a manner as stipulated by the
individual professor.
