culture, mind and body, and community文化・心身・コミュニティFEATURED COURSESProfessorMATO, ShigekoTake maximum advantage of the vast range of courses offered in the Culture, Mind and Body, Community cluster. Crossing the boundaries of humanities, social sciences, and other disciplines, explore the topics of your interest through multiple perspectives. In the process of gaining new ideas, you may feel disoriented, disturbed, or even distressed, but this should not be seen as a negative sign. On the contrary, it is a positive one, proving that you are entering a new threshold for stimulating your intellect and sparking your curiosity and quest for further knowledge. Be ready to begin a journey of learning in SILS with other students with different backgrounds from all over the world. Enjoy a journey of myriad surprises and wonders. The cluster examines the various ways in which humans make sense of the world they live in. Students explore how social meaning is created through language, literary reflections, performances, discourses, music, and film, and study the complex interplay between mind and body underlying these processes. They study the multifacted ways in which individuals construct their identities and the mechanisms by which imagined communities are formed. Understanding these processes is of paramount importance in tackling the challenges of the era of globalization, in which cultural heterogeneity and flux have become common. Our programme therefore not only aims at developing academic skills but also strives to educate critical citizens for a diverse world. Our Students can choose from a wide range of courses based on their academic interests and professional goals. They draw insight and inspiration from Literary Study, Psychology, Sociology, Gender Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Education, and Linguistics. ■ Chinese Contemporary Urban Culture■ Chinese Diaspora and Globalization■ Cognitive Psychology: Humans as Information Processing System■ Contemporary Performing Arts: Storytelling in Theatre ■ Culture and Law■ Ethnographic Documentary Film: Theory and Practice■ Hybrid Cultures and Identities in Spanish America■ Introduction to Jazz History■ Introduction to Text Mining■ Media and Visual Culture■ Motivation and Education■ Orientalism, Occidentalism, and the Representation of Japan■ Postcolonial Approaches to Culture and Gender in Oceania■ Sociology of Japanese Culture and SocietyMESSAGE FROM THE FACULTY13
