SILS(English)
6/28

SILS has two broad elements. The first is a global focus in which students of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds learn together in English. The second is a liberal arts curriculum in which students discover their academic interests by exploring a broad range of subjects. As part of its global focus, SILS conducts its classes in English. Why English? Nowadays, you need a solid command of English to cut it on the world stage. However, this practical value is not the real reason we have adopted English. The real reason is that doing so allows us to help gain recognition for our world-class standards in research. By adopting what is now the de-facto global language, we can attract students and teaching staff from around the world, and the research we produce will be accessible and transparent to a global audience. Another advantage is that it helps students to develop their critical thinking skills. Students undergo an epistemological process whereby they leave the comfort zone of their mother tongue and attempt to think and communicate their ideas in a different language. Through this process, they learn to contextualize their own thinking and to approach subjects or problems critically, from nuanced and multifaceted perspectives.*As for the second component—a liberal arts curriculum—the liberal arts are distinctive for their breadth. A great advantage of the liberal arts is that rather than selecting a major from the outset, you can explore a broad range of subjects and then narrow in on your interests. To help students develop wide-ranging academic perspectives, SILS offers seven clusters of subjects. Each of these clusters consists of three levels of expertise: Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced. As you progress in the clusters, you will gradually develop your expertise therein.Liberal Arts at SILSTackle global challenges from seven perspectives* ere is no limit to the number of classes that you can take from each cluster. For the Introductory Courses which students take in the rst year, students must take courses from at least three dierent clusters.ExpertiseInterdisciplinary7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 Clusters7 ClustersIntroductory CoursesIntroductory CoursesIntermediateCoursesIntermediateCoursesIntermediateIntermediateIntermediateIntermediateIntermediateIntermediateAdvancedCoursesAdvancedCourses6
