In addition, the school offers a wide variety of innovative programs and support for not only the student's studies, but also in choosing and embarking on their future careers, whether this be in Japan or abroad.Apart from its impressive infrastructure and location in Tokyo, SILS's unique merit is a flexible academic environment that supports a multitude of learning styles. As a student who prefers writing papers and giving presentations over taking tests, I found many classes that supported my preferences, and also those of scholars who were nothing like me. I thrived in SILS because I had the freedom to educate and motivate myself rather than adhering to a strict, time-consuming program. Reading in one of Waseda University’s vast libraries remains my favorite activity on campus. My courses frequently took learning outside the classroom—amongst the many exciting projects I participated in, I will always remember carrying out eldwork on the beautiful Iriomote Island, where our class interviewed local artists and investigated the region’s challenges with ocean plastic pollution from other countries. Needless to say, these experiences had a huge impact on my outlook as a student and consumer. SILS demonstrates diversity in far more than just its student and faculty composition—professors encourage us to transcend Orientalism and Eurocentric ways of thinking, to critique the theories of formidable experts (including themselves), and to undertake the research of countries and issues that go ignored in more ‘traditional’ liberal arts programs. I was given the training to academically engage with even ideas that make me uncomfortable and to interrogate the circumstances of our times. With the backing of an unorthodox yet versatile interdisciplinary program, I feel condent to pursue a number of potential education paths and know I will adapt with ease.SILS Sempai (the word for seniors in Japanese) Project is a student organization which provides support for freshman and younger students at SILS.
