cademic4675Governance, Peace, Human Rights and International RelationsI currently teach political philosophy courses and an introductory international relations course. There's a world of ideas available to you at SILS, so I encourage you to engage and challenge yourself to broaden your perspective. The longer I teach, the more I'm convinced this is key to improving our relations with one another. Likewise, think of your time at SILS as a chance to, as Hannah Arendt said, "think what we do." Given the uniquely diverse environment SILS provides, there may not be a better chance to make this happen.ProfessorSEUL, TimothyExpressionI teach Modern and Contemporary Japanese Literature in English translation here at SILS. You may find it a little strange to read Japanese novels in English translation when you can actually read them in Japanese. But by doing so, you can have discussions on Japanese culture with your classmates from all over the world. I am certain that you will gain new insights on Japan in this international environment. I hope you enjoy that.Culture, Mind and Body, and CommunityI am teaching Chinese, and classes related to migration. I specialize in migration studies, especially Chinese Diaspora, statelessness and people with multiple citizenships. I am interested in people “in -between” and rethink about system as nationality, passport as well as their identity and culture. I myself is an ethnic Chinese born in Yokohama, experienced being stateless. In my Chinese class, to master language for sure, I also introduce some livelihood and culture of Chinese societies. I wish students can practice and utilize what they learned in their daily life, not just study for getting credits.ProfessorCHEN, Tien ShiLaw, Politics, Peace, Human Rights, Minority Issues, International Relations, International OrganizationsLanguage, Communication, Foreign Language EducationFine Arts, Film, Theater, Music, Arts, Culture, Media TheoriesCULTURE: Comparative Culture, Gender Issues, Cultural Studies, Sociology, AnthropologyMIND AND BODY: Psychology, Philosophy, Mind-Body Science, Health TherapyCOMMUNITY: Cities, Regions, Communities, Global Companies, NPO / NGOProfessorSAKAKIBARA, RichiCommunicationProfessorDETEY, Sylvain Matthieu JulienStudents interested in developing an ‘international’ mindset must understand the mechanisms behind the process of communication. Linguistics is the discipline which examines the nature, structure and functions of language, with applications ranging from language education to speech processing systems, through discourse analysis. In SILS, students can also learn more than two languages, since plurilingualism is crucial for study-abroad, job-hunting and graduate studies, in a Content and Language Integrated Learning approach.05
