One of my professors at SILS noticed that my last name is Italian, and asked if I’ve been there before. My ancestors are from Sicily but they emigrated to America many years ago, so we no longer have any connections in Italy. My professor pointed out to me that I should take this opportunity and go study abroad at a country of my interest. So that is exactly what I did, and it was the best decision of my life. I lived in Venice for 4 months and there is nothing but good memories. I managed to pick up on some Italian phrases and I still continue to take Italian language courses here at Waseda University. Moreover, since I got to interact with people from many different parts of the world while studying at SILS, I became even more open minded than I was before. I even had a few opportunities where I became friends with someone from a different country at Waseda, and I got to go visit them in their home countries during vacation.
