10School of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University学問における主要なテーマは、自立して学ぶということ学問における主要なテーマは、自立して学ぶということThe major academic challenge is to learn independently　私は、行動経済学、ゲーム理論、そして実験経済学を網羅したミクロ経済学のトピックを扱っているヴェステグ・ロベルト先生のゼミを選択しました。勉強を始めた当初は、ミクロ経済学について多くは知りませんでしたし、ほとんど全ての教材が難しく感じられました。それでもヴェステグ教授の教え方はとても粘り強く、自分のペースで学ぶ素晴らしい機会を与えてくれました。またミクロ経済学では、人間の戦略的行動について学ぶ方が、仮説的な市場モデルを分析するよりも面白いと感じました。実験経済学やゲーム理論で取り扱われる手法やモデルは比較的明確で現実的であり、他のトピックスと比べて実生活に応用しやすかったです。　政治経済学部は、高いプロフェッショナリズム、素晴らしい教育設備、巧みに設計されたコース、そして国際的なバイリンガル環境を有する卓越した学術機関です。他の学部と比較すると、より学術的で、高いレベルでの総合的な学習能力を必要とします。この点で少しハードルが高いと感じることはありますが、一番大事なことは、大学のモットーの通り「学問の独立」です。政治経済学部では、私たちに対し、経済的理論やモデルだけを教えるわけではありません。何よりも、真の早稲田生として勉強する方法を教えてくれるのです。ここでの4年間の勉強を経たあとで、早稲田に入学しようと決めたその時点を振り返ったときに、きっと後悔することはありませんよ。I have chosen Professor Robert F. Veszteg’s seminar on microeconomic topics covering behavioral economics, game theory and experimental economics. When I first started studying, I knew little about microeconomics, and almost all study materials seemed difficult to me. However, Professor Veszteg’s extra-persistent teaching approach has given me the wonderful opportunity to learn at my own pace. In microeconomics, I found that learning about strategic behaviors of human beings is more interesting than analyzing hypothetical market models. Approaches and model handled in experimental economics and game theory are quite intuitive and realistic, so it was easier for me to apply them in real life compared to other topics.The School of Political Science and Economics is an outstanding academic institution with a high degree of professionalism, boasting fantastic educational facilities, meticulously designed courses and a cosmopolitan bilingual environment. Compared to other schools, it requires comprehensive learning capabilities at a more academic and advanced level. In that sense, there are times that I find it slightly tough, but what counts the most is academic freedom, the spirit in which Waseda University was founded. The School of Political Science and Economics does not merely teach us economic theories and models. More than anything else, it teaches us ways to study as a true Waseda University student. When you look back after four years of study at the School, you probably won’t regret your decision to enroll in Waseda University. Fourth-year student in the Department of EconomicsEnglish-based Degree Studies September Admission ProgramGraduate of Suzhou High School of Jiangsu Province, ChinaWang Qiyuオウ ケイウ英語学位プログラム 経済学科 4年中国・江蘇省蘇州中学出身経済分析は理論と実証の双方に基づいてなされるべきだと考えています。経済分析は理論と実証の双方に基づいてなされるべきだと考えています。Economic analysis should rely both on theoretical and empirical considerations　実験経済学は、経済学者の疑問や理論的な説明を、実験室における慎重な実証分析によって検証します。実験経済学における典型的な実験では、利害が相反するような状態において、人々（被験者）それぞれがどのような意思決定をするのかを直接的に観察します。例えば、彼らが共同で得た利益をどのように交渉し分配するか、リスクのある資産をどのように取得し売却するか、他人の努力にフリーライドすることが個々人にとっては有利になる状況において、進んでお互い協力し合うかどうか、といったことを実験によって確かめます。　私は、本当に意味のある経済分析は、理論と実証の双方に基づいてなされるべきだと考えています。そのため、特に私のゼミ、そしてゲーム理論の授業では、理論モデルを実証的に検証し、また逆に実証分析の結果を理論モデルを用いて批判的に検討することにより、学生がバランスのとれた視点を持つことができるよう努めています。　私の講義を受講する学生には、経済学や経済学者が私達の身の周りの世界をどのように見ているのかを学んで理解して欲しいと思っています。またそれと同時に、提示された解決策や説明の背後にある、経済分析の限界とそこに置かれた数々の仮定に対して意識的であって欲しいです。議論することは大切ですが、それは考え抜かれた主張に基づくものでなければ意味がありません。批判的思考と偏見のない心は、正しい答えを導き出すために極めて重要です。　高度な分析技術を持っていることは有利にはなりますが、学生にとって最も大事な資質は、好奇心とチャレンジする精神を持つことです。Experimental Economics takes questions that economists ask and theoretical explanations that they develop to the laboratory for a careful empirical analysis. In a typical experiment, we directly observe how people (participants) make decisions in specific conflict situations. For example, how they bargain about some jointly earned profits, how they buy and sell risky assets in markets, or whether they are willing to cooperate with each other when freeriding is more profitable.I firmly believe that serious economic analysis should rely both on theoretical and empirical considerations. For that reason, especially in my seminars, but also when I teach game theory, I try to offer a balanced view to students by complementing theoretical models with their empirical test, and by organizing empirical findings with the help of theoretical models.I would like my students to learn and understand how economics and economists look at the world around us. At the same time, I expect students to be aware of the limitations and the underlying assumptions behind the offered solutions and explanations. Discussion is important, but only if it is based on well-reasoned arguments.
