In the contemporary world, there are also global corporations, NGOs, and other non-state actors that can sometimes play roles that are more significant than those of individual countries. In the area of international relations, we not only study the history and reality of traditional inter-state relations such as US-Japan relations, but also research the supranational and transnational phenomena embodied, for example, in European integration and more specifically in the EU (European Union). The Department of Political Science does indeed have a long tradition, but it is not a place for handing down antiquated ideas. The majority of the faculty have global research networks, they bring the fruits of their research to bear in their teaching for students. The Department is therefore the optimal place for learning about the innovative trends in the field and studying the realities of an ever-changing world from a fresh perspective. In the courses, we consciously provide students with all sorts of materials—which are supposed to reflect the realities —as well as theories and concepts in order to think critically. At the Department of Political Science, students are required to examine critically all sorts of political phenomena. Students must occasionally gather information in English, and sometimes use statistical methods for analysis. It is our hope that students learn about Japanese domestic political realities, sometimes comparatively with Europe, and at the same time develop a global mind-set.
