In addition to systematic, step-by-step studies in political science and economics bridged by public philosophy, students enjoy a wide variety of courses that will provide them with the opportunity to acquire global literacy. With enhanced seminar programs, the School is putting into practice the University’s founding spirit of independence of learning based on the fusion of Eastern and Western civilizations in ways that meet the demands of modern society. Curriculum featuresThe School of Political Science and Economics is one of the few schools in the world that integrates political science and economics into one school. While receiving advanced education in both disciplines, students also study subjects in other fields and employ the perspectives of political science and economics to examine the mechanisms of modern society in which the two spheres are intertwined in a complex fashion. In an effort to further promote interaction and integration between the two subject areas, the School established the Department of Global Political Economy in 2004 with the goal of creating experts capable of analyzing and solving problems in a broad range of areas in today’s global society. Integration of politicalscience and economics政治と経済の融合Seminars are organized to provide students with a step-by-step learning process from the basics and consist of the following: Fresh-start seminars (first-year spring), Academic and Literacy-oriented Seminars (first-year fall to second-year fall), Specialized Seminars, Interdisciplinary Seminars, and Journalism and Media Studies Seminars (respectively third-year spring to fourth-year fall). Students can take Specialized Seminars outside their department and have the opportunity to work with and learn from their peers who share common academic interests in a small classroom setting of about 18. The Graduation Thesis seminar offers an opportunity to students of writing a paper based on their independent research under the guidance of a supervisor. Seminar education begins in the first year1年生からゼミで学ぶAll three departments offer curricula that are organized around the categories of introductory, intermediate and advanced courses, allowing students to clearly map out their learning process from basic to advanced. The introductory courses in political science and economics and the courses in the category of analytical methods and mathematics are common to all three departments. The curricula also include courses consisting of both lectures and discussion sessions to ensure that students gain a solid foundation and to help make their learning experience easier. Study guides and models are provided to facilitate a systematic approach to learning. Learning made easy by clearlydefined clusters and subject areas科目群や分野を提示し、より学びやすくStudents studying in Japanese will have the opportunity to take many courses from EDESSA (English-based degree program), providing them with a mini study-abroad experience within the convenience of the Waseda campus. In addition, many of the foreign language courses are taught by native speakers in small class setting.
