科目名IntensiveStudies4(Philosophy4)IntellectualsandCritique担当者名Ph.D.(哲学)エディンバラ大ダルグリーシュブレガム英語1単位秋学期月曜日6時限1年以上―24授業概要SincethesiècledesLumières,(Western)philosophyhasdevoteditselftotheproductionofknowledgewhich,amongstotherthings,establishesfacts,anchorsvalues,mediatesjusticeandpromisescritique.Thisinturnhasencouragedphilosopherstosidewithsocietyandspeakthetruthtopower,especiallyinthosemomentswhenittendstodomination.Perhapsthemostfamousfiguretodeployphilosophyinthisfashionhasbeentheintellectual,yetinrecentyearsthelatterseemstohavebecomeararespecies,ifnotonethatisnearextinction.Withthedeclineoftheroleoftheintellectual,theconcomitanttaskof(critical)thinkingastheAchillesheelofpowerisbroughtintoquestion,too.Theambiguouspositionoftheintellectualtodayraisesquestionsaboutknowledgeitself,aswellasitsproducersandthelocusofitsproduction,theuniversity.Inthislight,thecourseexaminestheroleofthemodernphilosopherfromthelate18thcenturyupuntilthepresentandthepossibilityofcritiqueitself.授業の到達目標Thecourseprovidesstudentswithanoverviewofsomeofthemaindebatesincontemporary(Western)philosophy,namely,thetheoryandpracticeofcriticalthinkingthatservesasthefoundationofintellectualengagementandtypicallydeploysknowledgetoanalyseandinterpretpowerrelations.Itemphasisestheconceptualcomplexityandcontinuingevolutionoftheroleoftheintellectual,whichisanalysedasaninterdisciplinaryspacewheresocial,political,culturalandphilosophicaldiscoursescoincideandconstantlychallengeeachotherinthenameofgeneratingacritiqueoftodayʼsmultiplemodesofpowerknowledge.Thebasicobjectivesofthecourseareto:1)understandthedifferentmodesofrelatingknowledgetopowerintheWesterntradition;2)elucidatesomeofthekeyrolesofthephilosopher,aswellasofthesocialscientistandhumanitiesscholarmoregenerally,thatthesemodesenable;3)encouragestudentstoarticulateapositiononthecriticalrelationshipbetweenknowledgeandpower;4)andtohelpstudentsdeployanalyticalskillsforthepurposesofprovidingbalancedjudgement,coherentargumentsandaclearandconciseinterpretationofknowledge,power,critiqueandcontemporaryphilosophy(orsimplyacademicthinking).成績評価方法40%FinalClassExam20%IndividualPresentation20%GroupPresentation20%Participation備考・関連URLThiscourseisbestsuitedtostudentswithaTOEFLscoreof500ormoreandorwhorelishandenjoyengaginginactiveclassdiscussionanddebatewithaviewtothinkingdifferently.Thiscoursewillbeofferedentirelyonline.科目名IntensiveStudies5(Literature1)CriticalTheory(Part1)担当者名文学博士(マンチェスター大)鈴木理恵子英語1単位春学期月曜日5時限1年以上―24授業概要Thiscourseoncriticaltheoryconsistsoftwoparts.Part1offeredduringthespringsemesterwillfocusontext-centeredcriticismsthatemergedaroundthefirsthalfofthetwentiethcentury.Whilethemainobjectiveofthiscourseistounderstandhowtheorycametobeinginthetwentiethcentury,whichdistinguisheditselffromthekindofliterarycriticismsthatwereprevalentinthenineteenthcentury,italsoaimstolookatvariousschoolsofthoughtwiththeirdifferingmanifestationsdependentontheinstitutionsandthenationalmilieus.Theyoverlapandinteractinwaysthatmakethetrendofcriticaltheoryofthefirsthalfofthetwentiethcenturydiscussableasmethodologicalformationsofacertainkind.ThisisnottosaythatwhatfollowsinPart2thatexaminesthecontextualizedcriticismsofthelattertwentiethcenturyisaseverancefromthetext-centeredcriticismsofPart1.Rather,theybuildonthelinguisticorandpsychoanalytic-basedcriticismsthatdominatedthecriticaltheorycoveredinthespringsemester.Althoughthefocusofeachclassisprovidedbelowbythemethodologyandanindividualtheoristmostassociatedwithit,thisdoesnotmeanthattheapproachisontheindividualpersenecessarilybutratheronthetextsthatarerelevanttothemethodologyinquestion.Giventhediversityofstudentacademicbackgroundandtheirlevels,Ihavemaintainedafairlyflexibleandopenmannerinwhichtoconducttheclasses.Whilecoveringthemaintextsfordiscussion,Iwelcomethedifferentperspectivesandmotivesstudentsbringtounderstandingandapplyingthesetheories.Therefore,itisnotmyintentiontoadheretoastrictandrigorousapplicationofthesetheoriestoliteraturefilmtheartsasonemightexpectofacriticaltheorycourse;butinsteadthecoursewillfocusonhowthesetheoriesbearrelevancetothedisciplinesinwhichrespectivestudentsarestudyingandresearching.授業の到達目標Thiscoursemaintainsseveralobjectives.Oneistohistoricallysituatetextsproducedwithinvariousschoolsof共通科目(外国語)(学部合併科目)―394―
