In fact, however, traditional texts and genres have proved to have a surprising vitality, inuencing literature outside Japan as well as within. In this seminar, we will look at the complex relationship between the translation and dissemination of Japanese literature abroad and the changing ways in which it has been understood and enjoyed inside Japan. Using ideas drawn from critical theory and translation studies, we will look at the translation and interpretation of particular texts drawn from various genres, such as the Genji monogatari, waka and haiku, the No and Kabuki, as well as more modern texts, and the relationship between how these texts have been understood outside Japan and within modern Japanese culture.　明治以降の日本文学研究では、古典文学と新しい西欧由来のモダニズム文学の関係性が注視され、それらが相異なるものとして理解されてきた。実際には、古典文学は日本近現代文学に大きな影響を与えたのに加え、海外の文化・文学にも少なからぬ影響をもたらした。本指導においては、日本文学が翻訳を通じ、海外でどのように受容されてきたのかを考察する一方、国際化の時代に日本文学が海外受容を通じて受けた様々な変化について検証する。具体的には、『源氏物語』などの古典文学作品、あるいは漱石などの近現代文学作品を例に、原典と翻訳テクストの関係を翻訳論などの文学理論を援用し解釈する。In many countries since the 19th Century, literature has played a great part in the formation of national identity and consciousness. At the same time, the study of national literatures, including the classics, has become an established part of school curriculums everywhere. On the other hand, the notion of 'world literature' has also emerged in this period, and the study of the classics of world literature has become an important element in both education and general culture. As a result, the translation of and reading of foreign literatures has also exerted an enormous inuence on the various national literatures. Using the Pacic metaphor of coral to consider how we all, in our collective marginalities, contribute to a diverse “reef” of culture, we aim in this seminar to consider alternatives to hegemonic regimes of cultural power. This directed research is especially geared toward students investigating themes of Pacic Islands Studies, postcolonial studies, war memory, tourism, militarism, gender/sexuality, masculinities, and other topics in relation to their master’s thesis.　本指導では、太平洋諸島の人々、日本における移民、LGBTQなどのセクシュアルマイノリティーなどの社会的・歴史的にマージナライズされたコミュニティーの目を通して、権力と文化表象の様々な問題を考える。太平洋らしい「サンゴ」という比喩を使い、それぞれの人間が持つマイノリティー的な特徴（つまり、マージナリティー）が積もって一つの「リーフ」になることを想像し、文化的権力のヘゲモニー以外の文化のあり方を課題とする。修士論文の関連研究の一環として、特に太平洋諸島学、ポストコロニアルスタディーズ、戦争の記憶、ツーリズム論、ミリタリズム、ジェンダー・セクシュアリティー、男らしさなどをテーマにする研究のためになる指導である。修士課程 / Master’s ProgramGSICCS | Taking Communication Beyond the Classroom14
