16FRIEDERICH, Ninon Julie Bernadette from FranceMaster’s Program Study Plan: Society and Communication Directed Research: International RelationsMy research topic for my Master’s thesis focuses on the integration of low-skilled foreign workers within Japanese society. In other words, the main purpose of this research study consists in understanding the role of Japanese institutions and their ability to implement relevant immigration policies ensuring the respect of labour rights for both national and foreign workers. Despite Japan’s reluctance to open up its borders and welcome incoming immigrants, the presence of foreign labour remains a signicant asset helping Japan to face its demographic decline and sustain economic activity. An emphasis on the perspective of labour unions and the voice of foreign workers themselves can have a positive impact on Japan’s policy-making process and the enactment of future regulations in the eld of immigration and labour relations.JIANG, Jingping from ChinaMaster’s Program Study Plan: Society and Communication Directed Research: International Political Economy My research topic is “Challenges faced by Chinese technology enterprises in overseas marketing and references from Japanese technology enterprises”.The background of this research is the unexpected encounter of Chinese companies in overseas market in recent years. Apart from political issues, there are also incidents like the activities of destroying Chinese companies’ 5G towers in the UK. I believe this is a marketing problem, resulting from simply applying the Chinese experiences without a thorough consideration of the local situation. These remind me of what happened to Japanese technology enterprises in the 1980’s in the US. Their products were boycotted back then, but from the 2000’s “made in Japan” has become welcomed again. What Japanese enterprises have done to make this happen and how such experiences may be applied to get the Chinese enterprises out of the current trouble is the core part of my research.JUKANTO, Nigel Harimannfrom Indonesia Master’s Program Study Plan: Culture and Communication Directed Research: Culture and TranslationIn my research, I am focusing on foreigners’s participation in Japanese doujin (self-publishing) activities, such as the translation of Japanese doujin-shi (self-published magazines) through scanlation (scanning and translation) or with the consent, and sometimes even with the assistance of doujin authors. My purpose is to discover whether or not there is sufcient demand for doujin-shi in the Japanese publishing market rst of all and also for its translations, especially English translations in overseas markets. I suppose that some kind of positive relations between Japanese self-publishing writers and non-Japanese readers in this grey zone of the self-publishing community are being constructed.SAKAKIBARA, Shihofrom JapanMaster’s Program Study Plan: Language and Communication Directed Research: Language and SocietyI am researching on talks on video chat, focusing on interactional problems that speakers from various lingua cultural backgrounds deal with.Due to the technological advancement and the COVID-19 outbreak, video chat has become a growing phenomenon used at business conferences, university classes, and “nomikai” as well! Also, its strength is connecting geographically separated people, so intercultural communication often takes place on video chat. However, because of the time delay to deliver voice or the limitation of eye contact, speakers have interactional difculties. This study aims to detect such trouble sources and how speakers repair for mutual understanding by using conversation analysis as the methodology.CAPRIOLI, Nicole from ItalyMaster’s Program Study Plan: Language and Communication Directed Research: Speech Communication and Language AcquisitionI joined Waseda University condent that GSICCS intercultural environment would be the best place to help me pursue my research objectives.Since my intended research focuses on the application of “Linguaculture” in second language acquisition, one of my priorities is to include both language and culture related learning in my studies. The GSICCS curriculum is structured to give students the possibility to broaden their knowledge according to their interests.I personally found the theoretical framework provided by GSICCS to be challenging and stimulating as well as essential to my research. I think that studying at Waseda University really helps with my academic advancement.
