15GSICCS | ResearchResearch at GSICCSSAHIN, Vuslat Nur from TurkeyDoctoral Program Directed Research: International RelationsDenitions and interpretations of security changed in many ways following the end of the Cold War. For my thesis, I draw on critical security studies and the work of Buzan and Waever from the Copenhagen School; in particular their analyses of securitization, security sectors, and regional security complexes. I argue that patterns of strategic alignment are emerging in the Asian region around two poles: China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and the idea of a Free and Open Indo-Pacic. I consider the possibility that as a result what Buzan and Waever refer to as an ‘Asian Supercomplex’ is emerging, through the penetration and merger of three older regional security complexes. My research will focus on the foreign policies of three key actors, China, Japan and India, and the ways in which their actions are contributing to or preventing the emergence of this supercomplex.ITO(BIBEE), Yoshiaki(Andrew) from JapanMaster’s Program Study Plan: Culture and Communication Directed Research: Cultural StudiesMy thesis paper, “Shadows under the Sun,” is focused on how black-Japanese athletes are represented in Japan. My attention is focused on two notable star athletes representing Japan on the global stage, Naomi Osaka and Rui Hachimura. Through the use of semiotic analysis, I seek to comprehend what messages their commercial representations are possibly sending to the Japanese public. As commercialized images are produced not just by corporations, but by the society/history they are based in, analyzing these images becomes critical to understanding what the Japanese public gaze takes away when viewing the two athletes’ images.LEE, Ka Sin from Hong kongDoctoral Program Directed Research: Visual CultureMy proposed research project attempts to interrogate the homosexual discourse in Boys’ Love live-action adaptations and inspired originals, in which male homosexuality as well as sexual identity formation is actively explored and the centrality of heteronormative culture is constantly enhanced and dissolved at the same time. The outcome of this research will show that the shift of gay characters, from analogous supporting roles for the purpose of displaying sexual perversity to leading roles that normalize being openly gay, has since been challenging the phenomenon of passing and defying heteronormative mainstream demands for assimilation. Currently, I focus on intermedial adaptation, especially from manga to television or lm, the relationship between Japanese popular media and gender conceptions, and media portrayals of the Japanese LGBTQ community. KIM, Shinyoung from Republic of KoreaDoctoral Program Directed Research: Second Language EducationMy PhD research theme is plurilingualism in Tokyo, with a focus on Korean newcomers growing up with three languages, i.e. Korean, Japanese, and English. My aim is to explore the perceived values of the different languages spoken in Tokyo, and, as a case study, analyze the modalities of plurilingual education given at home to children of Korean parents. By examining the epilinguistic attitudes of Tokyoites, and by assessing the role of Heritage Language education in the development of plurilingual abilities, my purpose is to give a clearer view of the linguistic dynamics of Tokyo and of its plurilingual potential.
