Also, the causes of such conicts and ways to resolve them will be examined, so that our endeavors would contribute to a global policy-making and/or effort to build and maintain a peaceful society. As a main focus of the research, three dimensions of peace operations (peacemaking, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding) of the United Nations will be explored, not only from the perspective of international security, but also from a viewpoint of human security of those who receive interventions by the outside actors. The peace and conict studies have an interdisciplinary foundation which involves various academic disciplines such as peace studies, conict resolution, international security, international relations, international politics, etc. Such an interdisciplinary foundation will be reinforced by the knowledge of history and area studies, as well as insights from socio-psychology (mass psychology, mobilization) and anthropology (languages, cultures, religions). International political economy witnessed some dramatic changes in the last decade. The global nancial crisis, the rise of emerging economies, the spread of globalization-sceptic populism, and the potential escalation of trade wars all challenged the existing knowledge we have regarding the operation of world economy, international politics, and their interaction. Nowhere was this trend more visible than in East Asia. While boasting the world’s most dynamic regional economy, East Asia is confronted with the growing uncertainties of geopolitical competition and the rising trade protectionism. This seminar aims to help postgraduate students to grasp the changing dynamics of international political economy (IPE) in East Asia and beyond. At the master level, students are expected to deepen their theoretical knowledge of international economics and politics, sharpen their analytical minds towards current affairs, and develop their own theses in the eld of IPE. At the doctoral level, ambitious young researchers are encouraged to pursue original and innovative IPE research projects based on rigorous qualitative/quantitative methodological skills, sophisticated theoretical enquiries of international relations and international economics, and extensive eldwork interviews and empirical data collection. Suitable research topics may deal with foreign economic policy, trade politics, currency politics, migration ows, FDI and business-government relations, development and foreign aids, regionalism and trans-regional cooperation. Applicants with a special interest in East and Southeast Asia are encouraged to join this seminar. Public Diplomacy may be dened as the diplomatic activity of governments in order to increase the presence of any country, to clean up the image of this country, and to promote a better understanding within the international society by inuencing overseas publics. It is closely related to the conduct to appropriately inform foreign countries of government activity in a manner consistent with their own national interests and to set the international environment in their favor. In this class, we will particularly follow the foreign policies of Japan, European countries, the U.S., and African countries, and we will study the nature of their public diplomacy in a logical and pragmatic way. We will also welcome researchers who want to study African affairs and students who are interested in working in MOFA, JICA, JBIC, JICS, and International Organizations, etc. Applicants will be expected to read not only English, but also French.
