12Taking Communication Beyond the Classroom | GSICCSStudent VoicesGALILEY, Marissa Alexandra from United States Directed Research: Speech Communication and Language AcquisitionWhat I like most about GSICCS is the well-rounded and varied nature of the curriculum. GSICCS students are provided with many avenues to broaden their perspectives in relation to their research theme as well as the chance to collaborate with classmates from other academic spheres. As a Speech Communication and Language Acquisition student, I was surprised to nd such a wide range of research interests even among the members of my own seminar. Meeting, learning from and sharing ideas with professors and students from diverse academic and international backgrounds has been my favorite part of my time at Waseda. GSICCS offers its students the option to enroll in and receive credit for courses offered by other graduate schools at Waseda, an opportunity which I took advantage of. The skills I acquired as a direct result of this decision have already proven useful as I prepare to conduct research for my master’s thesis regarding the link between phonemic production and second-language perceptual accuracy. Whether I choose to nd work in Japan or overseas, I am positive that my time here at GSICCS will be instrumental in securing my future career.ROJANADAMKERNGCHOKE, Chayanis from Thailand Directed Research: The Literature and Intellectual History of JapanI decided to join my program because this school provides a curriculum that responds to the objective of my master’s degree study: to expand my knowledge and improve skills that will help me pursue my career goal as a creative content writer. Unlike other programs in other universities, GSICCS offers courses that are related to various aspects of communication including media, culture, politics, psychology, and linguistics, which shows that the school has a visionary view towards communication in global society. Another attractive thing about GSICCS is its diversity. Students come from different cultural backgrounds, yet they are open-minded in sharing and learning about different cultures. My favorite classes are creative writing, media and cultural studies, text analysis, and research methods, which give me an opportunity to advance crucial skills to become a writer. My research topic is about Christianity’s inuence on Japanese popular culture, for which I am working under Professor Adrian J. Pinnington. Being able to work with him helps me greatly, thanks to his feedback and guidance on my research. HOKONOHARA, Kenji from Japan Directed Research: Peace and Conict StudiesHaving the dream of making Colombia a better place through its ties with Japan, and also with my academic background and the work experience I had, I wanted to conduct research about the situation of the business-based peace-building in Colombia and the possible incidence of the Japanese private sector. This motivated me to choose GSICCS, considering the diverse option of courses, the interdisciplinary programs, and the presence of my actual thesis advisor: Professor Uesugi (an expert in peace-building studies). GSICCS is a truly international school, not only in terms of the language or the classes it offers, but also because of the international community which nourishes the content of the classes from different perspectives, giving students the opportunity to approach a variety of realities and cultures while being in a country that is already rich in culture and history. If you are looking for a place where you can control your academic growth, while being part of an international community of students, you should denitely consider GSICCS!!
