25修了生の声Messages from Alumni (Doctoral Program)経済学研究科を志望した理由私が経済学に初めて触れたのは学部時代でした。経済学が急速に数理的になっていることは知識として知っていたものの、具体的にどう数理的なのか全く想像できずにいました。しかし、経済学の勉強を始めてみると日々の買い物から一国の政策まで、実に様々なことが数理モデルによって描き出せることを知りました。その見事さに驚いて、「自分でも描き出してみたい」と思ったことが経済学研究科へ進んだきっかけでした。院生生活を振り返って修士課程・博士課程共に、研究に集中することができる良い環境でした。環境の良さの一つに、奨学金の充実があります。私も給付型奨学金を受給することができたため、金銭的負担が軽くなりました。また、研究成果を学術誌へ投稿する際にかかる費用の一部を援助してもらえる制度や学会発表のための渡航費の援助など、積極的な研究成果発表を支援する仕組みが整っていたことも、研究進展の助けになりました。現在の仕事研究テーマはゲーム理論です。私たちは日常的に様々な集団に所属しています。例えば、会社や学校かもしれませんし、家族かもしれません。あるいは、SNSのグループや住んでいる町や国かもしれません。私たちの身の回りでは、このように多種多様なグループが互いに影響を与え合いながら、形成されたり崩れたりを繰り返しています。ゲーム理論の枠組みを用いて、いったいどのようなグループや組織であれば安定的に持続するのかを研究しています。学生へのメッセージ経済学というひとつの領域の中にも、多種多様な分野があります。しかし、どの分野でも、私たちが構成している「社会」を分かりたいという探求心は共通です。大学院では様々な技術を学びますが、これらの技術は探求心があってこそ意味を持ちます。ぜひ、探求心を携えながら高い技術を身につけていただければと思います。Reason for applying to the Graduate School of EconomicsIt was during my undergraduate studies that I first en-countered economics. I knew, at an intellectual level, that economics was becoming rapidly more mathemat-ical, but I could not even imagine specifically how this was so. However, when I first began studying economics, I learned how truly a wide variety of phenomena, including everything from daily shopping trips to national policy, could be painted in terms of mathematical models. I was amazed by this magnificent vision and thought that I, too, wanted to paint the world in that way. That is why I decided to continue my studies at the Graduate School of Economics.Looking back at life as a graduate studentIt was a beneficial environment for concentrating on my research during both my master’s and doctoral programs. One of the things that made this an exemplary environment in which to study was the full complement of scholarships available. Because I was able to receive scholarship stipends, the financial burden of my educa-tion was alleviated. I was also aided in pursuing my research through the mechanisms that actively supported me in presenting my findings, including a system that covers some of the costs for submitting research to academic journals and assistance with travel costs to present my research at academic symposia.Current jobThe theme of my research was game theory. In our everyday lives, we all belong to various groups. For example, these might be com-panies or schools; they might be families. Or, they might be social media groups or the towns and countries in which we live. All around us, diverse groups such as these interact with one another and continue to form and disband. Using the framework of game theory, I studied the question of which kinds of groups and organi-zations can persist and remain stable entities.Message to studentsThere are a wide variety of areas of study within the domain of economics. However, regardless of the area, the common thread is a curiosity to know the “societies” that we constitute. You study a variety of techniques in graduate school, but it is only because of this curiosity that these techniques have any meaning.
