Waseda University 20196Extensive research networkFocus on young researchers*** Waseda Vision 150, its strategic plan looking towards the 150th anniversary of the University’s establishment in 2032, Waseda has committed to research that will contribute to world peace and happiness in human society. Through original research Waseda aims to broaden and organize the world’s body of knowledge especially focusing on six key research areas:Global Japanese studies; Empirical analysis of political economy;Health promotion through sports and exercise;Embodiment informatics, ICT and robotics; Energy and nanomaterials;and Multiscale analysis, modeling and simulation.Waseda has academic exchange agreements with 795 institutions in 91 countries and regions around the world, and hosts over 800 international researchers each year. Waseda published joint papers with 1,472 institutions between 2010-2014 (SciVal), and is the top university in Japan in the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2017 for the percentage (40.4%) of international joint papers.Proven track record and government collaborationIn the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018, Waseda University placed in eight research areas in the global top 100. In the five broad subject groupings, Arts & Humanities and Social Science & Management are both very high (45 & 60, respectively), and two more, Natural Sciences (113) and Engineering & Technology (97) are also on the verge of the top 100. In addition, according to Education Ministry data for KAKENHI national funding grants, over the last five years, Waseda University was the top institution in 16 research fields centered in the humanities and social sciences. This is the best among all private institutions and 5th place when including all national universities and public research organizations.Waseda focuses on young researchers through the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study* and the Doctoral Student Career Center.** An increasing number of Waseda researchers are receiving awards and recognition, including the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Prize; The Young Scientists’ Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; the Thomas J.R.
