Waseda University was established in 1882 by Shigenobu Okuma. Since its inception, Waseda has openly welcomed international students, and currently boasts the largest number of international students in Japan. That number stands at around 7,000, of which half are graduate students. At Waseda, Japanese students and international students learn side by side in the classroom and laboratory, and also interact in many other aspects of campus life, through which they are able to establish a network and form friendships with other students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
