Through original research Waseda aims to broaden and organize the world’s body of knowledge　especially focusing on six key research areas:Global Japanese studies; Empirical analysis of political economy;Health promotion through sports and exercise;Embodiment informatics, ICT and robotics; Energy and nanomaterials; and Multiscale analysis, modeling and simulationWaseda has academic exchange agreements with 772 institutions in 90 countries and regions around the world, and hosts over 800 international researchers each year. Waseda published joint papers with 1,472 institutions between 2010-2014 (SciVal), and is the top university in Japan in the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2015 for the percentage (37.9%) of international joint papers. Proven track record and government collaborationWaseda is ranked 2nd in Japan for funding from private sector contracted research, and has strong collaborative partnerships with domestic and overseas companies (Toyota, Microsoft, Canon, etc.); and public research institutions (National Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (AIST), National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)), as well as government agencies.Waseda focuses on young researchers through the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study* and the Doctoral Student Career Center**. An increasing number of Waseda researchers are receiving awards and recognition, including the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Prize; The Young Scientists’ Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; the Thomas J.R. Hughes Young Investigator Award by the Applied Mechanics Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); etc. Leading research universityWaseda is a member of RU11, a consortium of eleven top research universities in Japan and is a leader of the nation's academic research.
