A number of motivated and highly capable students from well-known overseas universities, especially from Asian countries, have chosen IPS because of its well-developed research environment. IPS has exchange programs with approximately 40 overseas universities including Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Nanjing University which have sent over 60 students so far, and promotes exchange of students through various arrangements including the double degree program.

・As of October 2010, there are a total of 396 overseas students registered with IPS with 269 in the master’s programme and 127 in the doctoral programme.

From its first year, IPS has been offering lectures in both Japanese and English and students who do not have Japanese language skills can obtain a degree only with English. There are ample opportunities to communicate with students speaking different languages, which helps in mastering practical language skills. Those students who want to learn Japanese and Japanese students who want to learn English can take affordable lessons at the Language Learning Centre in Kitakkyushu Science and Research Park.

Most of the teaching faculty at IPS is from industries, which promotes collaborative and commissioned research with firms and overseas universities. Recognition of these achievements has led to a number of publicly funded research projects. Both teaching staff and students are deeply engaged with research in order to realize a sustainable society.

With student loans as well as student grants (repayment not required) which are unique to Waseda University, there are about 60 kinds of financial support provided in IPS and approximately 70% of the students receive some form of financial assistance. In addition, under the ‘Scholarship Program for Training Young Researcher in the Doctoral Program’, those registered with the doctoral program who are under the age of 30 receive scholarship equivalent to tuition fees, effectively resulting in a non-fee environment.

IPS aims to create knowledge in the Asia-Pacific at a global level and is actively trying to collaborate with universities abroad. For the purpose of collaborative research, overseas universities can use laboratories in IPS’s Research Centre. IPS organizes an international symposium with guest researchers and students from overseas universities every year, promoting international collaboration.

National Tsing Hua University, Beijing University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have an office in Kitakyushu Campus and are closely engaged in collaborative research. Other universities including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University and South East University have requested to open an IPS office on their campuses in order to pursue closer research collaboration.

State Scholarship for Excellence for Privately Funded Students from the Chinese government
The scholarship is awarded annually to students from China studying aboard who are recognized as excellent. In 2010, out of a world total of 504, 39 students were studying in Japanese universities including 6 at Waseda University (the highest number in Japan), of which 4 were in IPS. In 2009, out of a world total of 497, 49 students were studying in Japanese Universities including 4 at Waseda (the third highest number in Japan), all of them in IPS.

■Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Research Fellowships for Young Scientists
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science has ‘Research Fellowships for Young Scientists’ which provides financial assistance for research activities so that promising young researchers can concentrate on research. With the success rate of about 30%, the Fellowship is highly competitive, but a number of IPS’s doctoral students are awarded every year. In the academic year 2010: (Engineering) DC1 and DC2 – 6 were awarded (the third highest number among information technology graduate schools).

On graduating from IPS, students pursue careers in firms and universities within and outside Japan.
