The “ICC Discussion Cafe” is a place where both undergraduates and graduates from all faculties and backgrounds have the opportunity to come together and discuss important issues in English.
The theme of our 6th collaboration with the Tokyo Medical and Dental University is that of people being divided into the groups “artist” or “scientist”.
Not only in Japan but also across the wider world, there is this division, where people are divided into one or the other of these stereotypes by the impressions people have of them.
Last year, the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT) requested a review be conducted of all public university faculties on this issue.
In response to the findings there has been an outcry lamenting what is seen as “the neglect of the humanities” in Japanese universities and schools, which has become a hot topic in the Educational sector.
When did you first start to think “I am artistic” or “I am scientific”?
Furthermore, what do those “artistic” and “scientific” people think of each other?
Do the words “artistic” and “scientific” really have any meaning at all when speaking about human beings?
In this event, students from not only Waseda but also the Tokyo Medical and Dental University have the ideal chance to debate the points about what makes us “artistic” or “scientific”.
You don’t need to have a difficult speciality to join in. If you want to give your opinion in English, or you just want discuss with other University students, come along and join the debate!
