Sign Language Hour
There are many languages in the world, including sign language! Sign language differs depending on each country and language, and just like spoken language even has varying regional dialects!
Participants of the ICC Sign Language Hour first learned how to introduce themselves in a type of Japanese sign language, followed by smaller group sessions where they learned more complicated signs such as expressing their own hobbies, and also about different sign languages used around the world.
Event supporters that included students with hearing disabilities worked hard to ensure the smooth running of the event, which included preparing study materials to be distributed, and teaching the actual sign language.
After a short lesson, the 20 participants (70% of whom were international students!) practiced their newly learned self introduction in Japanese sign language in front of the group. Using a new language for the first time is always a nerve wracking experience, and sign language is certainly no exception! Participants did their best to overcome their nerves, and helped each other out by paying close attention.
Special guest Kazuhiro Matsuo taught participants more about the world of sign language. Matsuo-san, who teaches sign language to a wide variety of groups and organizations, also talked briefly about his own personal experience with living with "deafness".
During the smaller group session, members of the "Syuwa Circle", a student sign language club at Waseda, lent a helping hand by answering questions from participants, and assisting with communication. Disabled Students Services also supported the event though providing simultaneous text transcription.
The event was a massive success, and the wheels have already been set in motion to make the ICC Sign Language Hour a more regular event. Keep an eye on the ICC website for more details!
Comments from participants:
"I learned new ways of communication which made me realize that there is a deep bond between people which cannot be expressed by spoken languages alone"
"Leaning sign language was very enjoyable, and actually easier than I first imagined! Now that I have learned simple greetings, I would like to learn more!"
"The ICC Sign Language Hour was a great experience, and I'm glad that I participated. I will definitely come to the next one"
"I not only learned useful signs that I will probably have the opportunity to use in the future, but I also made lots of new friends!"
Facial expression is also an important part of sign language.
