Welcome to Japan! Welcome to Waseda!


The ICC's Japanese Festival offers many opportunities for you to become better accustomed to Japanese culture and life, through a variety of fun events and activities. From Japanese martial arts to day trips to traditional towns, the Japanese Festival has something for everyone! Read on for more details...

 

Yokoso! Tokyo Cafe
Sept. 25th (thu): 3:00 – 5:00 pm

 

 

“Yokoso” means “Welcome” in Japanese. At the “Yokoso! Tokyo Cafe” you will get the chance to find out more about this diverse and exciting city! Local Waseda students will give a short presentation of the ins and outs of Japanese youth culture, followed by a “travel plan competition”, in which participants will plan their own ideal “one day tour” of Tokyo! (prizes awarded for the best plans)

Field Trip

Sept. 26th (fri)
Option 1: Kamakura (Capacity: 20)
Option 2: Nikko (Capacity: 30)

 

Don’t miss out on this great chance to visit one of two regional areas of great cultural interest and experience traditional Japan! In Kamakura: visit “Daibutsu” (giant Buddha), shrines and also make your own pottery! In Nikko: visit World Heritage and catch a glimpse of Edo era Japan at Edo Wonderland! Which will you choose?

Japanese Martial Arts
Sept. 29th (mon): 4:00 – 6:00 pm

 

Interested in Japanese martial arts? Then, this is the event you have been waiting for! Get ready for authentic karate, mixed martial arts / kudo daidojuku and aikido performances from Waseda student clubs. Those brave enough may also get the chance to try for themselves!

Trying on “Yukata”
Sep. 30th (tue): 2:30 – 6:30 pm

 

Try on a beautiful Japanese “Yukata” (summer robe). Don’t forget to bring your camera! Also, please wear a light colored shirt (dark colored shirts will show through the neck of the Yukata).

Straw Sandals Workshop
Sep. 30th (tue): 4:30 – 6:30 pm

“Waraji” literally translates as “straw sandal”, and this traditional type of simple, eco friendly footwear has been used by Japanese people for generations. Now, here’s your chance to make your very own pair to take home as a souvenir (or wear to class??).
