Obaachan's Garden
OBAACHAN'S GARDEN: In 1923, Asayo Murakami left Hiroshima on the Iyo Maru to settle in the fishing village of Steveston, British Columbia, in Canada. Her family has memories of a lively woman who sang, danced and nurtured a flower garden, but underneath this exterior, the memory of what Asayo left behind in Japan haunted her.
The colorful tapestry of Asayo's life is detailed in this documentary as directed by her granddaughter, Linda Ohama. The film captures OBAACHAN's remarkable story starting from her life in Japan, her arrival in Canada, the forced relocation of her family during the Second World War, to the revelation of the tragic secret that she has kept within her heart through the years.
This documentary is an intensely personal reflection of Japanese-Canadian history and the testament of one woman's incredible endurance and spirit. The film has received numerous awards, most notable, the Silver Medal at the Torino International Film Festival and the Audience Choice Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival.
