Establishment and Overview

The School of Human Sciences was established in 1987 in order to meet challenges posed by contemporary issues with a more flexible and interdisciplinary approach; that is, to approach the field of human sciences without being constrained by past traditional academic structures and learning styles. The school aims to train true leaders who, with rich perspectives, will be pioneers in the field of "human sciences". The mission of "human sciences" is to begin to unravel some of the problems related to human beings and pursue a prosperous and comfortable existence for both human beings and the environment. The three departments in this undergraduate school use rich, multifaceted, flexible approaches to deal with these challenges.

Mission

The School of Human Sciences uses a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to deal with the various problems faced by human beings and ensure enhance their well-being. The aim is to train develop human resources that can work within the dynamic linkages between research, and education, and development, and practice. Each department tackles a different set of problems, specifically, such as "the environment", "health science and social welfare", and "information". However, departments sometimes take the same approaches toward problems; at times, and then a cross inter-departmental approach is necessary used. When students gain such problem-solving abilities, they are likely to be successful after graduation in diverse research areas both within and outside of Japan.

There are three departments in the School of Human Sciences, Waseda University: the Department of Human Behavior and Environmental Science, the Department of Health Science and Social Welfare, and the Department of Human Informatics and Cognitive Sciences. View Departments for more information.
