From the Dean

The Graduate School of Education at Waseda University was established in 1990, supported by the long history and traditions of the School of Education, which was founded to advance the Higher Normal School of Waseda University. As a graduate school that offers both master’s and doctoral programs and is responsible for both fostering researchers and training teachers in education-related fields, we have sent many talented individuals to the world who are active in various fields, including education. In 2017, we established a professional degree program through integration with the Graduate School of Teacher Education to further enhance our education and research system that combines theory and practice.

The Master’s Course consists of 5 majors: Educational Science, Japanese Language and Literature Education, English Language Education, Social Studies Education, and Mathematics Education, while the Doctoral Course comprises the Fundamental Studies of Educational Sciences and Curriculum Area Sciences majors. Each course is designed to nurture researchers with advanced abilities in the fields of education, subject pedagogy, and related fields, and to foster highly specialized professionals and reeducate professionals. Specialization in Advanced Teacher Training, which is a professional degree program, focuses on developing teachers who can play an active role as leaders in the field of education through combining advanced expertise and practical skills.

The Graduate School of Education is unique in that it provides a rich educational and research environment that has both depth and breadth. First, a number of courses and research guidance have been established to provide detailed guidance in order to enhance research expertise. We also offer a number of programs to foster an attitude of approaching research from a multidisciplinary perspective. In the Master’s Course, students learn a wide range of theories by taking common elective courses outside their own major, or deepen their understanding of the teaching profession by taking practical courses such as “Internship for Classroom Management.”In the Doctor’s Course, students are encouraged to take combined courses, in which they receive guidance from their own research supervisor as well as another faculty member with relevant specialization. We also focus on academic exchanges with overseas graduate schools. Many faculty members and students participate in dispatches and research presentations with four universities in China, Korea, the U.K., and the U.S. every year, actively exchanging ideas and opinions.

The Graduate School of Education is a place where professional academic researchers, leaders in the education profession, and would-be advanced professionals study together and inspire each other. Education, which is the foundation of society, faces a wide range of challenges today. We look forward to welcoming you to the Graduate School of Education to work with us as researchers and educational practitioners with advanced knowledge and expertise to think about the future of education and grapple with various issues.
