KOEDER, Marco JosefIn 2001 I moved from Germany to Japan to join a Tokyo based advertising group. I have worked there for over 9 years helping international clients with their online strategies in the Japanese market. Through my job I also had been involved in several trend, product and business model research activities during the last couple of years. My special field of interest has always been mobile and online communication and the economic, human and social elements behind it. As a graduated sociologist I often try to understand and analyze products and services based on the people who use them. Over the time I could see more and more that the secret of success in this field is not just about brining a brand or product online but about utilizing communication technology to provide meaningful and compelling solutions to consumers. As an outcome of these past experiences my co-researchers and I published a book about the Japanese mobile industry and its core success factors targeted at the US and the European markets.
The main motivations to apply for a PhD program for me were to bring my personal interests to a new level and being able to provide a contribution to society. How can (communication) technology be used to empower people, how can it improve our daily life instead of making it more complicated? In the short term my plan is to stay in a business environment but in the long term I want to shift my focus to academia and to teaching, combining my business and research activities. I knew this was not an easy task. This is why I was looking for a way to keep working at my current job and at the same time pursue my goal of writing my PhD thesis and join a high quality academic program.
I talked with former alumni, checked the specific fields of expertise of different departments and teacher and also how open the university is about non-Japanese students.
In the end Waseda became my first choice. My decision to apply for the GSAPS PhD program was driven by four main points: The university itself, its culture, the high quality of research and the Professor who would supervise my PhD.
With GSAPS and Mitomo-sensei I found a very good fit here at Waseda University. I enjoy the environment here, the good communication with my supervisor and my fellow students, the research work and also the bridging between theory and daily practice.
My wish is that through my time here at Waseda will be able to grow myself as a scientist and also as a human being.
