Faculty: Prof. URATA Shujiro
Language of Instruction: English or Japanese

East Asian economies achieved remarkable economic growth in the post WWII period. Despite a dramatic setback caused by the financial crisis in the late 1990s, East Asian economies have recovered. However, diverge in economic growth among East Asian economies emerged since the crisis. China has maintained its growth momentum, while Indonesia has not recovered completely from the crisis. This project attempts to examine the issues related to economies in East Asia with particular focuses on the processes of economic development, the causes of economic growth and the challenges for further economic growth. In particular, the roles of foreign trade and foreign direct investment will be given special attention. In addition, issues on regional economic integration will be taken up, as it is becoming one of the major topics in East Asia. Students that would like to enroll in the project should have knowledge and experiences in undertaking empirical analyses by using statistical methods. In addition, good knowledge of economic theory is expected, because without it meaningful empirical analyses cannot be pursued. First year students are expected to gain basic skills, while second year students are expected to work on master's thesis.
