Globalization and Cultural Transformation in Asian Societies
(Not available for prospective applicants)

Faculty: Prof. SONODA Shigeto
Language of Instruction: English or Japanese

It is our aim to study cultural transformation in Asian societies empirically in this project. Globalization or localization of cultures will be a key concept, but you should not limit your scope of interest to the culture in the narrow sense, like popular culture including the movies, cartoon, or arts. Cultures of social groups like family, company, generation, club, gender in Asian societies will be discussed from various angles.

Concrete topics, analytical frameworks, and methodologies will be picked up by each participant but his or her presentation will be severely checked by each other in terms of empirical persuasiveness, theoretical framework, and other aspects. Writing up a good master thesis is, needless to say, the final goal of this project. Kaigai-zemi, or comparative study of Asian cultures in collaboration with other Asian universities, will be carried out by the students' initiative.
