  1. Aims
    This project seeks to assist the student to develop research skills in his/her specialized topic. Although the overall field is East Asia and America, the students are encouraged to find the specific theme depending upon their interests. Through the discussions with the instructor and fellow students, each student will be assisted to develop their own interests, set a perspective and complete the thesis.
  2. Contents
    Literature review: to examine academic monograph with the emphasis on
    the theme, flow of argument and perspective
    Primary source: different types of documents
    ex. diplomatic documents, memoirs, diaries, newspaper
    public opinion polls, etc.
    Subject and perspective: statesmen, diplomats- policy making process
    intellectual, public- non-policy making process
    Outline, presentation, and writing
  3. Course method
    In the beginning, we should examine various kinds of academic works and documents. Then, students are required to give presentations on their topic.
  4. Materials
    Topics in the field are numerous and we cannot cover all the issues and various frameworks. However, it is useful to examine some of the major approaches and documents as a basis of training.
    *Example 1 – archival approach
    Foreign Relations of the United States
    official documents of presidents, memoirs etc.
    *Example 2- cultural approach
    newspaper, public opinion polls, media etc.
