Study of Politics and Economies in Southeast Asia

Faculty: Prof. MURAI, Yoshinori
Language of Instruction: English or Japanese

'Nation State' is not necessarily the most important key concept when we consider the politics and economies in Southeast Asia. Although I don't deny the importance of the 'Nation State' in Southeast Asia, we also should remember the artificial national border. Because of the interests of colonial states the national borders between Malaysia and Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea were artificially drew. Sometimes we can understand more real situation of Southeast Asia if we take off the national border. We should be more flexible when we could understand the reality of Southeast Asia.

Another important point is the ongoing process of the 'Globallization'. National border is becoming lower and lower. Huge trans-border move of materials, money, information and people have made the world more interdependent than ever, so in Southeast Asian nations.

This Project Research aims at the political, economical and socio-cultural analysis in Southeast Asia both from the socio-cultural and historical stand point and also from the ongoing process of globalization.
