Japanese Economic Development and Asia

Faculty: Prof. KOBAYASHI Hideo
Language of Instruction: English or Japanese

Many people have said that the primary factor behind Japan's successful economic growth after the World War II was the realization of Japanese management and its production system. However, in the light of the financial crisis in Asia and the economic depression in Japan, it is said that the Japanese system should be reexamined. This project is designed to research the origin of the Japanese system and its development and also to conduct a historical review of the socio-cultural factors that have influenced the Japanese system. The project is also designed to examine how the system has been transferred to countries in Asia-Pacific region as Japanese business firms expand their business overseas, and also how it has been modified due to different political, economic, and historical factors. Also we shall examine the future of Japanese management system and consider the overcoming policy of the hollowing out of Japanese industry in comparison with the Chinese, Korean, Southeast Asian, and American management systems. This project can be carried out in English as well.

Participating students should collect primary data and examine previous theses by using the public document center, libraries and public agencies. In my project, field survey is a very important tool for the research of your subjects. In order to do the field survey, you should prepare, in consultant with me, the study plan suitable for your academic needs. English, Chinese, or Korean language is necessary for your field survey.

During the first year, you are expected to take my course entitled "Theory of Japan's Economic Development". In addition, you are incited to participate in the class for my Project Research in which we will review available documents and articles concerning the Japanese economy. If necessary, you may have to do the field research during the summer term. By the end of the second year, you have to complete your thesis.
