Governance in China and Asia

Faculty: Prof. AMAKO Satoshi
Language of Instruction: English or Japanese

China's presence as an economic, military, political, and social power in the world has been increasing upon entering the 21st century. It is not easy to analyze and judge such a huge country as China. This is proved on the one hand by some specialists who are cautious of China's threat as a big power. On the other hand, there are others who emphasize China's collapse due to serious troubles. The purpose of this project is to research and analyze some important domestic issues in the political, economical and social fields as well as some international topics on globalization, security and various other issues in order to understand contemporary China objectively, theoretically and comprehensively as possible as we can.

For example, first is to research the actual conditions of change and lack of change, positive and negative results produced as a result of the open door and the reform policy since 1978. Second, is to deal with the topic of China's threat. Inspecting the capability, intention and image of threats on political, economical, military and cultural levels will approach it.

No clear framework or approach for researching human society or analyzing issues in natural science has been established. This is true because human relations and societies have not always operated logically and rationally but in contrast have worked at times paradoxically and irrationally. The suitable framework and approach for your research will be found and created with serious trial and error process by studying social science theories, analyzing original documents and conducting fieldwork. At present, there is tension and interaction between theory and proof. I believe this is the real pleasure of researching area studies. I strongly hope my students should attach importance to original documents and fieldworks with an open and flexible mindset.
