Seminar Outline

The following is a MA student's impression of the Shinohara seminar.

"Shinohara Seminar is all about diversity, and academically speaking, it focuses on the relationships between the U.S., Japan, and the other East Asian countries (of course including People's Republic of China and ASEAN etc.). With multiple choices of academic spheres under the scope of International Relations, you are able to bring and delve into any imaginable subject you might have the most passion on. That includes, but not limited to, the security, culture, history, identity politics, diplomacy, power struggle, media, gender, terrorism, nationalism, environmentalism, democratization and so forth. You can further expand your academic horizon by taking theoretical approach such as realism, liberalism, constructivism, international society, international political economy etc., or pragmatic approach such as a comparative demonstration of military capabilities among several nations and/or projection of them to the security policies. Either prescriptive or descriptive, there is one thing unique about this zemi. That is, since the range of students' academic interests in this seminar is totally varied and divergent, this zemi gives you full of unexpected criticisms and insights at the same time. Different perspective always stimulates your intellectual inertia and more often than not helps you get out of academic impasse. Thus, discussion in Shinohara zemi is always intense and vibrant and, yes you are required to be very enthusiastic and active in participating in it. Considering its widely different backgrounds of members, the discussion is naturally held in English. For that it can be said that Shinohara seminar is a miniature version of the UN. Throughout this seminar and two years of intensive study and academic discourses, we expect you to become a fully internationalized responsible global citizen, who can work for the betterment of the future.

In addition, in this zemi, some academically related field trips are occasionally held. Although the discussions are serious, the overall atmosphere is pretty cozy and homey. We have several drinking sessions and welcoming & farewell party.

So if you want to make one of the most memorable two years in your life, this is the place to be !" (HK)
