Features And Structure

[Course Work of Graduate School of Law]
The Graduate School of Law has an educational system for degree students and academics, called “course work” in order to accomplish our mission as a “degree-awarding organization” and a “training school for academics.”

  • For doctoral degree students
    • 1)Consistent MD education system
We call the education system for instruction in doctoral-thesis-writing a “consistent MD education system.” In concrete terms, we integrate a master’s degree program (2 years in principle) and a Doctoral Program (5 years in principle) to form a consistent 5 year education system in order to develop the capability of students who aim to acquire a “curriculum doctorate degree.” Basically, for academic instruction, the professor organizes a collective executive team and gives step-by-step programs to support the creation of doctoral theses of students through 5 years of the MD system, such as a program for the creation of planning documents for a doctoral thesis, an open progress report session, and a qualifying examination.
    • 2)Transfer from Doctoral Program
Masters of graduate schools of law of other universities or other graduate schools, or people who have legal certification can take the examination of the Doctoral Program when they aim to acquire a “curriculum doctorate degree.” The course work for this Doctoral Program is the same as 1)
  • Transfer to Doctoral Program
If you complete your studies with only the Master's Program in the consistent MD education system, you have to pass a master’s thesis examination. In the curriculum, it is required to create a planning document and to demonstrate your progress in a progress report session.
  • Rich curriculum program
The master’s degree needs 30 credits. The Graduate school of Law provides a rich curriculum that enables the development of academics and support for students writing a doctoral thesis. Under the lead of your professor, you can select and study a proper curriculum and develop your education and capability as an academic. In addition, various types of programs (see the other page) are provided based on the “Reform Promotion Program for Graduate School Education.” This program helps cultivation of capability as a future academic, and collection of information for a doctoral thesis.
