数学をやって一番楽しいのはどんなときですか?
What is the most enjoyable thing about studying mathematics?

「わかる」こと=楽しいです。問題が解けたときはもちろんのこと、いろいろな(一見わけのわからないように見える)数学的概念の意味や重要性が理解できたときもとても嬉しいです。
The most enjoyable thing is the feeling of understanding. Of course, it is very satisfying to understand how to solve a problem, but there is also a great feeling when you understand the meaning and importance of mathematical concepts that looked incomprehensible at first.


数学者になれますか?
Can I become a mathematician in the future?

毎年のように何人もの人が数学の研究職に進みます。また、教員やコンピュータ関係、金融関係、出版関係のように数学を生かせる仕事につく人も大勢います。
Each year we have many graduates who become mathematics researchers. Also, a great number of students enter professions where they can apply their mathematics skills, for example, in teaching, computing, publishing, and finance.

大学の数学で大切なのは何ですか?
What aspects of mathematics are stressed in this department?

抽象化された概念の構成や証明のプロセスを大切にするので、計算だけでなく、自分で根本から考えてみることが重要です。
It is very important to understand the structure of abstract concepts and the process of proofs. For this reason, we encourage students to not only carry out calculations quickly and accurately but to always think at a deep level about the problem they are attempting to solve.

数学は紙と鉛筆だけでできるというのは本当ですか?
Is it true that I can study mathematics with only a pencil and paper?

極論すれば可能です。数学は思考力の産物ですので、誰にでも研究可能で、原理的には万人からその正しさを評価されることができます。しかし実際には、紙と鉛筆だけでなく、図書文献(古いものでも価値あり)、コンピュータが必要な場面も多くあるでしょう。また、よい先生に恵まれることも大切です。
In one sense this is true. Mathematics is a product of human intelligence and therefore in principle anyone can study mathematics and the results can be evaluated by anyone in society. In reality, however, we need more than just a pencil and paper to carry out modern mathematics. For example, new and old reference book are frequently used, and the solutions to many problems require computers. In addition, finding a good teacher is always important.
