How did you find out about Waseda University?

I was searching for a while for a master’s opportunity in Japan.  I found several universities with the field I want, but Waseda was the best among them for me.

Why did you choose Waseda University?

13281857_10154326785207873_353495251_nMainly I chose my professor’s lab first, because I liked the projects and the fields he is working on.  Then I checked the university’s website and liked the environment in general so I chose to apply.

How did you get information for our program?

I knew about the program while applying for the scholarship, it provided some information about each university and the programs available.  The international program in Waseda is in English so this was the most important issue for me because I cannot speak Japanese.

Did you have any concerns before coming to Japan?

Mainly the language issue.  I knew before I came to Japan that not many people can speak English so I was afraid it would be a problem for me to communicate with my colleagues in the university and in everyday life in general.  But actually this issue was not a big problem for me in Waseda University, there are a lot of international students who speak English of course, and even most of the Japanese students could speak English.

Have you had any difficulties when you started a new life here?

Not really, maybe I was a bit lucky because I met friendly people everywhere who helped me.  But finding an apartment was the only difficulty I faced at first because I am a foreigner who does not speak Japanese.

How is your life in Japan and Waseda?

With Egyptian friendsLife in Japan is really good, despite the research load at the university I have time to go out with friends to enjoy the parks especially in the Spring or go to museums.  In Waseda it is really easy to get used to the environment and start making friends.

What do you do in your free time?

Usually in the weekends I go out with friends to have dinner and visit new places.  Sometimes all the lab members go out together to celebrate graduation or new members in the lab.

How are the relationships with your supervisor and lab members?

Skiing trip with the labMy supervisor is really kind and helpful.  He helps and supports me a lot with my research.  Also my lab members are friendly, they help me to adapt to everything in the university and the lab and they even help me sometimes with my research when I need something.

Outline of the research

My research is mainly about the human robot interaction.  I am working on how the robot interacts with humans in unknown environment in a familiar way for human beings in order to remove the barrier between robots and humans.  My work is mainly about how the robot perceives this environment including other robots, machines or humans in this environment and how he treats them.

What is your career goal after your degree completion?

I am still considering either continuing my studies and apply for PhD, or go for the industrial track and work for a company in my field.

Short message to the prospective students

in English

Working in robotics was my main target after finishing undergraduate studies, but working in Japan made it a different and more enjoyable experience.  I believe Waseda University is a perfect environment for an international student who wants to study in Japan, it was easy for me to adapt to life in Japan and to receive the knowledge and experience I need to continue my study.  So I encourage every student who wants to study here to apply and enjoy the life in Waseda.
