Individual and group behaviors are affected both by expectations concerning personal well-being and by expectations concerning the behavior of others. What promotes and constrains these expectations are institutions, that is, the behavioral norms and rules that exist in society. But, those institutions which fail to meet social expectations become dysfunctional, which in turn lowers the level of expectations. To avoid becoming trapped in such a vicious circle, our research center seeks to reveal and examine a set of conditions under which institutions for a society can fulfill the expectations of its members (an "expectation-realizing society"). Building upon the successful achievements of Waseda's previous 21COE-GLOPE (Center for Global Political Economy), we will continue our efforts toward integrating the methodologies of political science and economics and attempt to explore new theoretical frontiers by placing the two concepts of expectations and institutions at the center of our research activities. Along the way, we will also contribute to significant development of human capital, nurturing the upcoming generation of academic scholars able to engage in cutting-edge research and expert practitioners able to apply their scholarly knowledge to their professional fields.
