| A ceremony to commemorate the opening of the representative office in Japan of l’Institut d`Etudes Politiques de Paris, one of Waseda University’s partner institutions, was held through the collaboration of the two institutes.
L’Institut d’Études Politiques (IEP) was established in 1872 and is one of France’s elite schools (grandes écoles), famous for having a number of politicians and high government officials, including French President Jacques Chirac, among its graduates. IEP and Waseda University signed an academic exchange agreement in 1998, and since then there have been student exchanges every year, as well as frequent researcher exchanges. In addition, Waseda’s Okuma School of Public Management and IEP’s Public Management Program work together on education and research matters. In order to facilitate close exchange, it was agreed in April of 2005 to establish exchange offices on the Paris and Tokyo campuses.
An opening ceremony for the Waseda University Paris office was held on October 17th at l’Institut d’Études Politiques in the presence of Waseda University President Shirai, and l’Institut d’Études Politiques Director Descoings. At the commemorative lecture which followed the ceremony, a speech was given by Waseda University honorary professor Youichi Higuchi in French and was followed by a lively question and answer session with the participants.
On October 31st, the ceremony for the opening of l’Institut d’Études Politiques’ Japan representative office was held at Waseda University in the presence of Deputy Director Verillaud, followed by a commemorative lecture by Exchange Researcher, Dr. Roland Marchal.
