The Hirayama Ikuo Volunteer Center (WAVOC) was founded in April of 2002 and carries on as an inheritance both the international philanthropic activities and the very spirit of its founder, Ikuo Hirayama, who was professor emeritus of Waseda and a Goodwill Ambassador to UNESCO. Along with working to develop further the various activities promoted by Professor Hirayama, the Center works to expand and support its educational research activities and volunteer activities both inside and outside of Japan. It is the goal of the Center to make philanthropic contributions at both the regional and international levels through these various activities.
Outline of WAVOC Activities
In various regions, both overseas and at home, the Center develops project in various fields, including peace building, educational support, human rights, the environment, music, and sports. Anyone over 18 years old or over can develop a WAVIC project.
It is possible to have an independent project you designed yourself (a type of volunteer project) and bring together a group of friends and colleagues to work on it.
In 2006, Waseda's Open University offered classes related to volunteering.
Courses that that combine lectures (theory, knowledge) and practical learning (activities and putting into practice what you've learned) are all courses offered during a set term
At WAVOC, a wide variety of educational programs are implemented.
Among them are: a school for environmental volunteers, a career-planning seminar on profession in international cooperation, a lecture in Swahili on specialization of the instructor, a seminar devoted to studying Hansen's disease. In addition to publishing a booklet every year, hereafter the investigation research section will also be enhanced
A wide variety of events are held. They include large-scale charity events, lectures, and events and plans spontaneously generated by the students.
WAVOC is an organization associated with Waseda University that develops “educational philanthropic activities.” Along with contributing to the world through these activities, the Center is able to encourage and stimulate the personal growth of those who participate in these activities. The personal growth evident in the participants and the contributions to social development are the distinguishing characteristics of the educational philanthropic activities that are the aim of WAVOC.
Adoption of the Special GP (Good Practice) Designation in the 2005This was adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2005 as a “Special University Educational Support Program”.Hereafter, WAVOC will continue to actively development educational philanthropic activities.
※1) Special University Educational Support Programs (Special GP)Among the activities of various universities that the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology view as improvement to university education, certain programs are being selected as “Good Practices,” that is, unique activities or programs that are outstanding in their own right. By providing financial support for these programs, the Ministry can push forward its reform of the university system and work toward its goal of revitalizing higher education in Japan.
