
Established in 1978 on Waseda University's Okubo campus adjacent to the School of Science & Engineering, this school changed names from Waseda University College of TechnologyEto its present name, in 2001. It offers evening courses to train professionals and to provide continuing education for individuals who are already employed, through regular and special programs of study.
The regular program includes two- and three-year courses of study which are offered by four departments - Architectural Engineering; Spatial Images; Architectural Design & Structural Engineering; and Urban Design. With the exception of the three-year Architectural Design & Structural Engineering, and Urban Design courses, the other departments' programs of study are two years long.
The special program refers to 14 subjects - Nine subjects selected from among regular course offerings, and five independent subjects related to the regular course. These
special programs must be completed by attending one or two classes per week, in a period of 15 or 30 weeks.
To be eligible for admission to the regular and special programs, applicants must hold at least a senior high school diploma. Admission to the regular program and special programs is competitive and based on the results of an entrance examination prepared and administered by the school. Enrollment of April 2002 was 554 students.
Courses are taught by full-time faculty members of the school and by Waseda University faculty members (listed below), as well as other specialists, leaders in each field.
The Kawaguchi Art School of Waseda University, sister school to the Art & Architecture School, is scheduled to open in 2003 in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture. It will offer a three-year, daytime course of study in which students can study Digital Cinema, Video Journalism, Media Art and so on.
