Waseda University Corporation (President: Katsuhiko Shirai, Location: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) and VIED-MOET (Director General:Nguyen Xuan Vang, Location: Hanoi) held a signing ceremony at the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in Vietnam on February 10, 2010, upon which a Memorandum of Understanding on academic exchange (MOU) was concluded.
Under the MOU, Waseda University will strive to enhance educational cooperation and collaboration in a wide range, including educational support to Vietnamese students and promotion of academic and educational activities, as well as fostering of mutual understanding and goodwill between the two countries.
The Vietnamese government has initiated a plan to produce 20,000 Ph.D degree holders (approximately half of which by way of study abroad) by 2020. According to the plan, about 1,000 students are expected to be educated in Japan by 2020.
A study opportunity in Japan will be awarded to incumbent professors and students who are expected to become researchers and/or professors after obtaining a degree, with a hope that they will establish a base for higher education in Vietnam in the future.
Under a mission to incorporate "Knowledge Co-Creation in Asia-Pacific", Waseda University's active acceptance of foreign government-financed students has been underway, in accordance with doctoral education support projects primarily of developing countries in the Asian region.
With the conclusion of the MOU, Waseda University intends to further deepen exchanges between Vietnam and Waseda, in addition to providing continued support for acceptance and education of foreign researchers.
