Waseda University (President Katsuhiko SHIRAI) was selected as the site for four centers for Global COE Programs (designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) starting in 2007. This is the highest number of the centers among private universities in Japan.
These programs are based on the 21st COE Program established in 2002 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. They aim to improve and strengthen graduate research education and nurture world leaders in the world-class research environments. They also focus on establishing world leading centers to increase international competitiveness.
Waseda applied for five following fields: Life Science, Chemistry, Material Sciences, Information, Electrical and Electronic Sciences, Humanities, and Interdisciplinary, Combined fields, New disciplines. Below table is the list of centres selected in 2007.
