Mr. Yunhe Pan is the President of Zhejiang University. He was born in 1946 in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. In 1970 he graduated from the Department of Architecture of Tongji University in Shanghai and worked as an engineer in a factory in Xiangfan City, Hubei Province. In 1981 he obtained a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Zhejiang University. From 1981 to 1990 he worked as an instructor and assistant lecturer in the Computer Science Department, teaching and performing research. From 1986 to 1988, he was a visiting scholar at Carnegie Mellon University and at the University of California at Los Angeles. He became a professor in the Computer Science Department of Zhejiang University in 1990, Vice President in 1994 and President of the University in 1995. In 1998, the former Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University joined to make the current Zhejiang University; President Pan became President over this newly formed comprehensive Zhejiang University and has remained in this position until the present day. President Pan also does important work on the national level, having been chosen twice – for the 9th and 10th sessions – as a representative in the National People’s Congress.
Professor Pan is a preeminent researcher. As early as 1997 he was made a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and is considered a pioneer in China in ICAD and computer art. He introduced artificial intelligence into computer graphics and CAD technologies, and he proposed a series of models pertaining to synthetic reasoning and image thinking. He has published over two hundred papers in this field and has been presented with a number of honors from the national government and from Zhejiang Province, two of which are 2nd Class of the National Award for Technological and Scientific Advancement from China’s Ministry of Science and Technology and 1st Class of the National Award for Technological and Scientific Advancement from China’s Ministry of Education.
As a scholar and as an educator, Mr. Pan has contributed to the development of computer science; and as the head of the university’s administration, he has made Zhejiang University one of the top universities in China. As a Key Comprehensive University, Zhejiang University boasts 24 State Key Specialties and 12 State Key Laboratories; this spectacular growth is in no small part thanks to the tremendous efforts of President Pan. Currently, Waseda University has as its goal the “Symbiotic Creation of Knowledge in the Asia-Pacific Region.” Zhejiang University, with its top-rate research and educational accomplishments, is a crucial partner in making this goal a reality. In October of 1995, Waseda University and Zhejiang University signed an academic exchange agreement which has greatly contributed to development of friendly cooperation between the two universities through student and researcher exchange. It is thus quite fitting that Zhejiang University President Yunhe Pan be presented with this Honorary Doctorate Degree.
The President, Chairman, Auditor, Regents and Faculty at Waseda University hereby agree unanimously to confer upon Mr. Yunhe Pan the title of Doctor of Science.
